Many Japanese people know it from the traditional song:

“Summer is coming soon, Hachijūhachiya…”

Hachijūhachiya refers to the 88th day after the first day of spring according to the traditional Japanese calendar.
It usually falls around May 2nd each year and is considered an important seasonal turning point from spring to summer.

This day also has a very special meaning in Japanese tea culture.

The Season of “Shincha” — Fresh New Tea

Around the time of Hachijūhachiya, tea farms across Japan begin harvesting the year’s first fresh tea leaves, known as “shincha” (new tea).

These young tea leaves have survived the cold winter and grown slowly under the gentle spring sunlight.
Because of this, the tea harvested during this season is known for its rich flavor, fresh aroma, and smooth taste.

In Japan, there is a traditional saying:

“If you drink tea picked on the 88th night, you will live a long and healthy life.”

For this reason, Hachijūhachiya is considered a lucky and auspicious day associated with health and longevity.

The number 88 itself is also meaningful in Japan.
The character “八” (eight) symbolizes growth and prosperity because its shape widens toward the bottom.
In addition, the Japanese character for rice, “米,” can be visually divided into the characters for “eight,” “ten,” and “eight,” which together make 88.

Because of these connections, Hachijūhachiya has long been celebrated as an important seasonal milestone in Japanese agriculture and culture.

For centuries, Japanese people have lived closely connected to the changing seasons.

八十八夜と日本のお茶文化 ― 新茶の季節に味わう、日本の美しさ ―

春のやわらかな空気が少しずつ初夏へ変わり始める頃。
日本には「八十八夜（はちじゅうはちや）」という、美しい季節の言葉があります。

「夏も近づく八十八夜〜♪」

という童謡を聞いたことがある方も多いのではないでしょうか。

八十八夜とは、立春から数えて88日目の日のこと。
毎年5月2日頃にあたり、春から夏へ移り変わる節目の日として親しまれています。

そして、この八十八夜は、日本のお茶文化にとって特別な意味を持つ大切な日でもあります。

八十八夜は「新茶」の季節

八十八夜の頃になると、日本各地の茶畑では新茶の収穫が始まります。

冬の寒さを乗り越え、春の恵みをたっぷり受けて育った新芽。
この時期に摘まれるお茶は、香り高く、旨味が豊かで、とても貴重なものとされています。

昔から日本では、

「八十八夜に摘んだお茶を飲むと長生きする」

と言われてきました。

そのため八十八夜は、健康や無病息災を願う、縁起の良い日としても知られています。

また、「八」は末広がりで縁起の良い数字。
さらに「米」という漢字を分けると「八十八」になることから、農業においても大切な節目の日として受け継がれてきました。
